Co-amoxiclav (amoxicillin & clavulanic acid). Per Bioclavid 250 mg/125 mg tab Amoxicillin trihydrate 250 mg, clavulanate K 125 mg. Per Bioclavid 500 mg/125 mg tab Amoxicillin trihydrate 500 mg, amoxicillin, clavulanate K 125 mg, clavulanic acid. Per Bioclavid 875 mg/125 mg tab Amoxicillin trihydrate 875 mg, clavulanate K 125 mg. Per 5 mL Bioclavid susp Amoxicillin trihydrate 125 mg, clavulanate K 31.25 mg. Per 5 mL Bioclavid Forte susp Amoxicillin trihydrate 250 mg, clavulanate K 62.5 mg
Indications/Uses
Tab: Treatment of common bacterial infections eg, upper & lower resp tract, ENT, skin & soft tissue, GUT infections, osteomyelitis, septicemia, peritonitis & post-op infections, acute sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia. Susp: Treatment of infections in adults & childn eg, acute bacterial sinusitis, acute otitis media, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, community acquired pneumonia, cystitis, pyelonephritis, skin & soft tissue infections: cellulitis, animal bites, severe dental abscess w/ spreading cellulitis, bone & joints infections: osteomyelitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Bioclavid tab Adult & childn >12 yr Mild-moderate infection 250 mg/125 mg, More severe & resp tract infection 500 mg/125 mg. Adult, juvenile & childn >12 yr (>40 kg) 875 mg/125 mg. Bioclavid susp Childn 7-12 yr 10 mL, 2-7 yr 5 mL, 9 mth-2 yr 2.5 mL. Bioclavid Forte susp Childn 7-12 yr 5 mL. Childn <12 yr 25-50 mg/kg/day. All doses to be taken tid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Preferably taken at the start of meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins & β-lactam agents. History of jaundice/hepatic impairment.
Special Precautions
Serious & occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions (including anaphylactoid & severe cutaneous adverse reactions). Convulsions in patients w/ impaired renal function or in those receiving high doses. Infectious mononucleosis. Patients w/ antibiotic-associated colitis; reduced urine output. Patients w/ evidence of hepatic & renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematologic & hepatic function changes, mucocutaneous candidosis, dizziness, headache, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Oral anticoagulants, MTX, probenecid, mycophenolate mofetil.
